Sega Dreamcast: House of the Dead 2
November 12th, 2008 by Sean R.
I firmly believe House of the Dead 2 for the Sega Dreamcast is the greatest light gun game ever conceived. It’s pure adrenaline as you blast the limbs off hideous undead while exploring a gothic-looking city inspired by Venice.

You can’t control your movement directly, but your path branches based on the innocent civilians you save (or don’t save).
The shooting action is nonstop mayhem. Depending on where you shoot a zombie, an arm may fly off, a huge hole could be blown in his chest, or his head could be blown clean off. Read the rest of this entry…

Sega Genesis: Desert Strike
November 4th, 2008 by Sean R.
Here’s an exciting action/strategy game that was clearly inspired by the Gulf War. You pilot a helicopter in a series of missions in a desert environment, viewing the action from a three-quarter overhead perspective.

From large building complexes to tiny soldiers, the graphics are realistic and well detailed. The excellent control system makes it easy to control the helicopter.
The A, B, and C buttons are assigned hellfire missiles (powerful), hydra missiles (medium), and machine guns, respectively. The Start button brings up your current status, a map, and your current objectives. Read the rest of this entry…
Sega Dreamcast: Soul Calibur
November 3rd, 2008 by Brandon W.
Soul Calibur has been hailed one of the greatest games ever created. When released in 1999 on the Dreamcast, Soul Calibur was named the year’s best fighting game at E3.
From there, the game went on to receive perfect scores from leading reviewers such as GameSpot, Electronic Gaming Monthly, and IGN.
So what makes this game so great? When you pick up the controller and play, you instantly notice how smooth and natural the fighting comes to you. Until this time, fighting had never been presented in such a superb way. The way Namco developed the fighting system, allows an individual to complete complicated moved without extremely skilled timing. A vast array of moves gives way to numerous possibilities in defeating your enemy. Read the rest of this entry…
Sega Dreamcast: Visual Memory Unit
October 30th, 2008 by Brandon W.
VMU stands for Visual Memory Unit. These little devices are the Dreamcast’s saving system, much like memory cards.
The VMU is unlike any other saving system. Each VMU comes with a little black and white LCD screen, a D-pad, A and B buttons, and Sleep and Mode buttons.
When taken out of a controller you can actually turn on the VMU. Once on, you can either manage files or access mini games. You can even plug two VMU’s together to transfer files.
Mini games become accessible once you save a file from your Dreamcast game. Much of the time, what you complete on the mini games effect your actual gameplay stats.
For example, on Sonic Adventure you can obtain little chao eggs. You can care for these eggs and once they hatch you can train them using your VMU. The better your Chao is trained, the more races he will win in the actual game.
Another wonderful feature of the VMU is its in-game capabilities. Once plugged in, the LCD screen becomes viewable through a little window in the controller. As you play the game you can see animations related to the game.
In Soul Caliber you can actually see the character you chose practicing moves. In some games, the screen is both functional and useful. In NFL2K you can pick your play using the VMU so that nobody can screen watch.
Many people would agree with me when I say that the Dreamcast has one of the best saving systems out of any console. What other memory card has a built in LCD screen that lets you play games? Besides, they just look so cool.

Sega Dreamcast: Crazy Taxi
October 25th, 2008 by Sean R.
When I first played Crazy Taxi, I thought “Wow this may be the BEST video game EVER!”. It’s one of those arcade-style games that is instantly fun and addicting.

The gameplay is simple. As a cab driver, you earn money by picking up riders and taking them to their destination as fast as you can. The shoulder buttons serve as your accelerator and brake, and two other buttons allow you to reverse or power slide.
Driving through the city is like an out-of-control roller coaster ride. You can drive everywhere - the sidewalks, in the park, on the beach, even underwater! Read the rest of this entry…
