NES - Popeye

November 6, 2008 - 8:35 am - Posted by Sean R.

I’ve played Popeye on a number of the classic consoles, but the NES version seems arcade-perfect.

Nintendo Popeye

The vibrant graphics are very high in resolution and exhibit no hint of flicker. The characters are faithful to their cartoon roots, even conveying trademark expressions and mannerisms.

Popeye must traverse three screens of platforms in an attempt to collect items tossed out by Olive Oyl at the top of the screen. In the first screen it’s hearts, in the second it’s musical notes, and in the third (pirate ship screen) it’s letters that spell out “HELP”. Read the rest of this entry…

Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance

November 5, 2008 - 9:15 am - Posted by Sean R.

It took some time to win me over, but Harmony of Dissonance for the Game Boy Advance is one of the more enjoyable Castlevania games I’ve experienced.

Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance

The graphics are gorgeous as you would expect, and the music is amazing for a portable handheld game console.

You assume the role of a vampire hunter exploring a huge, mysterious castle. Armed with your trusty whip, you’ll acquire all sorts of weapons, spellbooks, and artifacts as you progress. Read the rest of this entry…

Platinum Wireless Wavebird Controller

November 4, 2008 - 6:24 pm - Posted by Sean R.

Earlier this evening I was searching eBay looking for another Wavebird controller so I would have four and came across this eBay auction:

Brand new wireless wavebird platinum sealed in retail packaging. Very hard to find in this condition. Great for Smash Bros. Ships free via USPS Priority with delivery confirmation. 2 available.

This Nintendo GameCube Wavebird sure is a beauty, all sealed and minty fresh as seen in the auction picture below but…

Platinum Wireless Wavebird Controller

The only issue I have with this auction is the controller is $114.99 USD. Yikes. I don’t need a brand new sealed Wavebird that bad.

Apparently this seller has 2 Wavebirds available at this price if anyone is interested in paying way too much :)

I did a little more checking and found out that the eBay 90-day eBay average price is $24.00 USD, so I’ll just keep looking for a used Wavebird.

Sega Genesis: Desert Strike

November 4, 2008 - 8:58 am - Posted by Sean R.

Here’s an exciting action/strategy game that was clearly inspired by the Gulf War. You pilot a helicopter in a series of missions in a desert environment, viewing the action from a three-quarter overhead perspective.

Genesis: Desert Strike

From large building complexes to tiny soldiers, the graphics are realistic and well detailed. The excellent control system makes it easy to control the helicopter.

The A, B, and C buttons are assigned hellfire missiles (powerful), hydra missiles (medium), and machine guns, respectively. The Start button brings up your current status, a map, and your current objectives. Read the rest of this entry…

Luke’s Top 5 Standby Game Boy Games

November 3, 2008 - 11:24 pm - Posted by Luke C.

Game Boy games hold a special place in my heart thanks to many nights spent playing them when I didn’t feel like reading but parents or other annoying roommates had already taken over the TV. I’ve had a lot of GB and GBA games over my life, but I always come back to this handful of them.

Game Boy Logo

The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening:

What can I say? This game may not be perfect, and may not even be the definitive version of itself, but it is a well-made, fun, and humorous entry into the Zelda series.

Revenge of the ‘Gator:

It’s pinball in a convenient handheld size. Even just as pinball, there’s nothing very outstanding about it beyond the (admittedly amusing) alligator motif. Still, it often saved my sanity as a kid being dragged around town – sitting in the car or a waiting room for half an hour is so much easier with this game. Read the rest of this entry…

Sega Dreamcast: Soul Calibur

November 3, 2008 - 7:37 am - Posted by Brandon W.

Soul Calibur ArtworkSoul Calibur has been hailed one of the greatest games ever created. When released in 1999 on the Dreamcast, Soul Calibur was named the year’s best fighting game at E3.

From there, the game went on to receive perfect scores from leading reviewers such as GameSpot, Electronic Gaming Monthly, and IGN.

So what makes this game so great? When you pick up the controller and play, you instantly notice how smooth and natural the fighting comes to you. Until this time, fighting had never been presented in such a superb way. The way Namco developed the fighting system, allows an individual to complete complicated moved without extremely skilled timing. A vast array of moves gives way to numerous possibilities in defeating your enemy. Read the rest of this entry…

GameCube: Super Mario Sunshine

November 2, 2008 - 10:55 am - Posted by Sean R.

It’s always a joy to play a brand-spanking new Mario game, and Super Mario Sunshine radiates with all the magic and charm we’ve come to expect from the pudgy plumber.

Super Mario Sunshine

The storyline revolves around a Mario look-alike who has vandalized the beautiful Isle of Delfino. Unjustly charged with the crime, Mario is sentenced to clean up the island with the help of a high-powered, water-spraying backpack.

This innovative device really adds a whole new dimension to the standard platform fare. It’s a blast to hose off nasty sludge, and you can even turn the nozzle on your foes! Read the rest of this entry…
