The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening DX

So a few days ago Luke reviewed “The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening” for the original GameBoy.
In the comments a few of us discussed the Game Boy Color version, so I figured it would be good to write a review with my take on it, in full color *grin*

The Legend of Zelda series has always been awesome, mainly because of the games’ creator, Shigeru Miyamoto.
Shigeru Miyamoto is the most famous game developer in the world, the creator of Mario, Donkey Kong, Link, and Kirby.
This game is no exception, sporting amazing graphics for the GameBoy Color, an intriguing storyline, and gameplay that will totally suck you in.
You are Link, the valiant boy hero from Hyrule, and you have gone off to tour the seas and hone your skills as a warrior.
Suddenly your ship is caught in a violent storm and struck by lightning.
The next thing you know, you’re in a house, being woken by a beautiful girl who calls herself Marin.
She and her father Tarin tell you that you are on the tropical Koholint Island, and that you washed up on the beach last night.
You journey to the beach to retrieve your trusty sword, and a mysterious owl appears before you.

He says that to escape the island and return to Hyrule, you must wake the Wind Fish, who forever sleeps inside an egg at the top of the highest mountain in Koholint.
To do so, you must collect eight Siren instruments from eight dungeons on Koholint. You prepare yourself for the most challenging adventure of your life…
The original Link’s Awakening was great, and the new GameBoy Color version is even better.
Besides having a whole new dungeon for you to explore, you can visit a photographer that will take a picture of you as you go on your adventure.

As an added bonus, you can print out these picture on the GameBoy Printer.
Every inch of Koholint Island is shown in lush color, and an 8-bit Link has never looked better.
The sound effects are really good, and the soundtracks are great too.
Gameplay is challenging, but not impossible.
Sometimes you’ll be scratching your head trying to figure out a strange puzzle, other times you’ll be furiously battling a Nightmare Monster to retrieve a Siren instrument.
It’s never boring, because there’s always some new dungeon to explore, some new item to find, and some new place to discover.
I really enjoy playing this game on my GameBoy Advance SP NES Limited Edition.
If you have any kind of GameBoy system, and if you have the means, this is an absolute must-have game.

Oh wow! The colorized version looks really good. Have you finished the game yet? and if so, how long did it take you?
I know I mentioned the cameos of other Nintendo characters in my review, but I think it bears repeating since you have a screenshot of it right there: Characters from other Nintendo series make cameos in this game. I was surprised the first time I saw that Chain Chomp there, and it just blew my mind when I stomped on a Goomba and had to jump a pipe with a Piranha Plant in it a little later. This was a huge deal when I was eleven, and even now we only have what, maybe three or so cases of major mixes of series mascots?
@Billy: Indeed, the color DX version is a really nice perk to the game but the original black and white version that Luke reviewed is still very playable today.
@Luke: Nintendo is always mixing things up from time to time it seems. You have a really good eye for catching things in the screen shots that I use. Excellent job my friend.
